OLPC

OLPC, standing for One Laptop Per Child, started as a goal to provide children in developing countries with a low cost but very capable laptop. Originally started by Nicholas Negroponte, this project has grown to international proportions.

Although he missed the mark to create a laptop for under $100, having a fully functional machine for under $200 is still an amazing feat.

Since these laptops have to be durable enough to withstand extreme temperatures and climate conditions, a regular set up wouldn't have cut it. These computers feature a hand crank power system, one which has a 1:10 ratio. Meaning, one minute of cranking will power the laptop for 10 minutes.
